The Carousel of Inevitability and Certain Foreboding

Writer's picture: Kelly AutryKelly Autry

Have you ever wanted to visit the World’s Fair? How wonderful it must have been to see the marvels of modern technology and get a glimpse into how they could improve your life in the future! Thats certainly what Jimmy and Donna thought when they visited the 1964 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows. But they got a lot more than they bargained for! The Carousel of Inevitability and Certain Foreboding is a spectacularly farcical piece that thrusts our squeaky clean protagonists into a nightmarish future. With book by Gil Varod, music by Jonathon Lynch, and lyrics by A.J. Freeman, this piece dissects the principles of unfettered capitalism and takes it to a dystopian extreme. Its delightfully absurd and will keep you thinking long after you’ve finished watching! I had an absolute blast playing one of the protagonists, Jimmy. Sincerity in the face of absurdity is my favorite kind of comedy, and there’s plenty of that in this piece. As this was produced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was recorded remotely and presented at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts event “Across a Crowded Room”, rebranded “Across a Crowded ZOOM” during these unprecedented times. Check out the piece and the full event’s lineup below!
